Medical Devices Are a Necessity

Access to medical technology shouldn't be a privilege gated by cost, geography, or proprietary lock-in. Across the world, clinics, makers, and field medics face shortages of critical devices — not because the technology doesn't exist, but because it's too expensive, too closed, or too hard to repair.

We believe electronics builders have a role to play. Ohmshade is committing to developing open medical kits — documented, repairable, and freely available to anyone who needs them.

// Why It Matters

Access saves lives

Pulse oximeters, vital monitors, and diagnostic tools are out of reach for many communities. Open, buildable alternatives close that gap.

Repairable by design

Proprietary devices become e-waste when a single part fails. Open schematics and documented builds mean anyone can fix them.

Built for everywhere

Rural clinics, field medics, and home-care patients need the same quality of care. Open hardware travels where supply chains don't.

Our Open-Source Commitment

Once we develop a medical kit, all files will be open-source — schematics, wiring diagrams, firmware, 3D-printable enclosures, and build documentation. No paywalls, no locked firmware, no proprietary connectors.

We want availability and ease for all: download the files, build it yourself, modify it for your needs, and share improvements back with the community. The goal is maximum reach, not maximum lock-in.

// Roadmap

  1. 01

    Research & needs assessment

    Identify the medical devices with the highest unmet need and the clearest path to an open build.

  2. 02

    Prototype & validate

    Build working prototypes, test with real-world users, and iterate on reliability and safety.

  3. 03

    Full open-source release

    Publish every file — schematics, firmware, enclosures, and docs — free for anyone to use and improve.
